Power cuts and production cuts, memory price increases are imperative

In 2020, the price of memory has dropped a lot, and the performance of manufacturers will inevitably be affected. The three major manufacturers of Samsung, Micron and SK Hynix have already cut production earlier. According to normal supply and demand adjustments, prices will start to increase as soon as the second half of next year.

Unexpectedly, Micron’s fab had a power failure. This was a power outage at the fab in Taoyuan, Taiwan. The power outage lasted about one hour.

Micron officials subsequently publicly stated that a power trip occurred in the Taoyuan plant on December 3, and the plant immediately activated its safety protection mechanism. At present, the equipment has been operating normally after the power is restored, and Micron expects that the plant will resume production within a few days.

Although there was only one hour of power outage, the capacity of this factory was too large, with a monthly capacity of 125K, accounting for 8.8% of the global total monthly DRAM capacity of 1,418K. The main products are DDR4 (PC and server DRAM) and LPDDR4.

Because of this, a one-hour power outage has given many manufacturers in the memory industry an opportunity. Since the 4th, major module factories and other spot traders have suspended quotations.

Although the current power outage will eventually end the trend of memory price declines and drive up memory prices, there is no final result, but the memory industry's expectations have been raised.

Affected by this, market funds have begun to be optimistic about memory manufacturers in advance. Taking the Taiwan stock market as an example, Nanya Technology’s stock price soared by 20% last week, Winbond’s stock price has risen directly by 30%, and memory module manufacturer ADATA is also in these days The stock price rose by more than 20%.

After a small fluctuation, memory manufacturers have already felt the joy of victory.
