A single bar can reach 512GB! The biggest advantage of DDR5 memory: capacity

The price of DDR4 memory sticks is already very cheap. DDR5 memory will be available in 2021. Although the initial stage is mainly for the data center market, the new generation of platforms is worth looking forward to. The frequency of DDR5 memory can be doubled compared to now.

In July of this year, JEDEC officially released the DDR5 SDRAM standard (JESD79-5). Its pin bandwidth (frequency) is twice that of DDR4. The first release will start at 4.8Gbps (4800MHz), which is 50% more than the standard frequency of the last generation DDR4, 3200MHz. As a result, the total transmission bandwidth has increased by 38%, and will reach a maximum of 8400MHz in the future.

Most people are also concerned about DDR5 frequency, but for industry experts, frequency may not be the most important. Micron Chief Architect Frank Ross recently stated that upgrading from DDR4 to DDR5 is no big deal, and it is not a big challenge for Micron.

In contrast, Frank Ross believes that capacity may be more important. The capacity of DDR5 memory particles will start from 16Gb and will reach 32Gb in the future. There may be a 24Gb transition in the middle.

The 16Gb core capacity means that one core has 2GB capacity, and the single memory capacity can easily reach 16GB. If more cores are piled up, then a single 256GB DDR5 memory will be very popular.

If it is a 32Gb core, then a single DDR5 memory can theoretically achieve 512GB, which is already the capacity level of Intel Optane memory. The future 8-channel server can easily achieve 8TB or even 16TB memory capacity.
